June is the gateway to summer – longer days, warmer weather, and plenty of sunshine. While many of us enjoy spending more time outdoors, your skin might not share the same enthusiasm. Increased sun exposure, heat, and humidity can lead to common skin issues like sunburn, breakouts, and dehydration. As dermatology experts, we are here to help you enjoy the season while keeping your skin healthy and glowing. Here are our top recommendations for surviving summer skin stress:
1. Apply the Right Sunscreen – Every. Single. Day.
Sunscreen is not just for pool or beach days. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every single day – even on cloudy days. We recommend looking for options with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin. It is also important to reapply every two hours, especially if you’re spending time outside, sweating, or swimming. Pro tip – don’t forget to apply sunscreen to overlooked areas such as the ears, lips, and the tops of your feet!
2. Prevent Sunburn & Heat Rashes
We recommend that you avoid direct sun exposure between 10 AM and 4 PM when UV rays are strongest. In addition to SPF, we recommend protective clothing, sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats when outside during these hours to prevent sunburn. Heat rash can be prevented by wearing breathable fabrics and showering after heavy sweating. For cooling relief, look for products with aloe vera or calamine.
2. Manage Oily or Acne-Prone Skin in Humidity
Hot, humid weather can cause your oil glands to work overtime, leading to breakouts. During the summer months, we recommend switching to a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer and cleanser. We also advise the use of non-comedogenic products that won’t clog pores and gentle exfoliation once or twice a week to prevent buildup. We can also prescribe prescription acne medications to help clear up or prevent these breakouts.
4. Hydrate Inside & Out
Your skin loses moisture faster in summer, especially when you’re sweating more. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and use a hydrating serum or lightweight moisturizer with hyaluronic acid to keep your skin plump and refreshed.
5. Summer Skincare Myths—Busted
- Myth: “I don’t need moisturizer in summer.”
Fact: Even oily skin needs hydration—just switch to a lighter formula. - Myth: “Getting a base tan prevents sunburn.”
Fact: A tan is a sign of skin damage and does not protect you from further UV harm.
Your skin is the largest organ of the body, and it deserves special attention during the summer months. With the right skincare habits and a bit of prevention, you can enjoy everything the season has to offer without putting your skin at risk. If you have any further questions, we’d be happy to see you in office to discuss!
